Zanzibar was built on spices. Clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla. On a working plantation you see them growing, not in a shop, but on the tree and in the ground.

You taste everything. Fresh turmeric, raw cinnamon bark, jackfruit if the season is right. A climber goes up a coconut palm and sings while he does it. You will smell like the island for the rest of the day.

Add lunch with a local family and eat what the farm grows, cooked the way it has always been cooked.

A

Abdalla, or one of his trusted friends

Born and raised on Zanzibar. Abdalla guides whenever he can. When he is fully booked, a guide from his own circle steps in. All of them from the island, all of them vetted.

Can we buy spices there?
Yes, straight from the farm. Prices are fair and the quality is better than the airport shops. Cash works best.
Is the lunch vegetarian-friendly?
Very. Most dishes are built on rice, coconut and vegetables. Tell us about diets when you book and the family cooks around them.
