A traditional dhow, a crew that has sailed since childhood, and a day on the water around Menai Bay. This is the classic Zanzibar sea day, done properly.

You stop at a sandbank that only exists at low tide. You snorkel over coral gardens. If the dolphins show up, the captain knows how to give them space and still get you close.

Lunch is grilled seafood on Kwale island: fish, slipper lobster, rice, sauces, fruit. You eat with your feet in the sand. The dhow sails you home in the late afternoon light.

A

Abdalla, or one of his trusted friends

Born and raised on Zanzibar. Abdalla guides whenever he can. When he is fully booked, a guide from his own circle steps in. All of them from the island, all of them vetted.

I cannot swim. Can I still come?
Yes. Life jackets are on board and the sandbank stop is shallow. The crew keeps an eye on everyone in the water.
What should I bring?
Swimwear, sunscreen, a hat, a towel and dry clothes for the ride back. Leave valuables at your hotel.
